Yu-Gi-Oh: in which an average high school student is chosen by an ancient artifact to save the world. By using a card game.
Sound kind of lame? It is. It could be worse, though. There are some pretty interesting characters (plenty of shounen, though their bi-ness is debatable), and if you don’t watch the anime-only Doma and Grand Prix arcs, there’s a plot without too much filler. The Ancient Egypt season was actually quite good, for being a sometimes “so bad you have to laugh” shounen anime. Not exactly heavy fare, but if you don’t mind overbearing friendship speeches, occasionally hilarious and unintentional innuendos (from the dub: “You’re wrong, Marik, your evil shadow powers will never penetrate me!”… or have this clip play in another window without watching it, and try to tell me it doesn’t sound like sex), or chunky, chunky hair and an art style that is, well, “easy to emulate”, it kills time pretty well.
It is also an excellent breeding ground for yaoi – a dozen male characters who all interact and are set in an easy-to-write setting with a plot that leaves plenty of gaps to fill with fanfiction.
