What’s your type? Part One: The Hero
The Hero
He is the main character. His introduction is usually the first thing you see, and he’s in every episode. Scenes don’t seem complete without him. If there’s a battle to save the world, he’s the first one in line, sword drawn, staring down the hordes of evil with only a handful of loyal companions by his side. However unwilling he’s drawn into a fight, he never shies from it. He may not be the one with the highest grades or the most moral fiber, but he’s motivated by something more than what drives mere mortals; whether it’s the fate of the world at stake or simply the whims of someone he cares about, he will fight to the death for it. Failure is not an option for him, and if he should happen to falter it destroys his world… until the faith of his friends gives him the strength to go on. His backstory is usually straightforward, with just enough convolution to get him his boundless strength of character, but that’s all right, for who needs backstory when you have friends? His feelings for others run deep and he’s usually poor at hiding them – and of course the Evil One finds him so very easy to manipulate with those frail human emotions, yet they invariably are the key to his victory. His greatest strength is his shining, courageous spirit and iron strength of will; against impossible odds and in the direst situations, he will prevail where lesser men would fail. Even if he has to be forced into his role, by the end of his journey he is a shining beacon of all that is good and right. Though his demeanor may be rough around the edges, his actions speak the truth – he will defend those too weak to fend for themselves, and face off against the evil forces that more often than not offend him by their very existence. When the darkness encroaches, and all hope seems lost, do not fear, for standing tall and proud for truth, justice, and the anime way, there is The Hero.
Types he commonly overlaps with: The Chibi (Yuugi), The Bad Boy (Yusuke)
The main character of a given series… Ash, Inuyasha, Kenshin, Naruto, Parn, Yami, Yusuke, Yuugi…
What he says about you:
You probably admire the strength of the character, if not particularly his goodness, and yet the humanity of his feelings for his friends, family, surroundings, and the world in general. He is the hero in all of us, able to be weak and uncertain, and able to find his inner strength and keep on going. He also has the potential to be the most realistic character, even if other characters are relatively one-dimensional. If this is your type, you probably harbor a deep-seated faith in humanity and a touch of idealism, no matter how deeply hidden.
His best matches:
-
Loyal Steed – The strength in this pairing is enough to make your fanfiction explode with an overload of awesome. They have a perfect symbiotic relationship, feeding on each other: the Hero inspires the Steed toward greatness and makes him want to be a better person just by being around him; the Steed has the amazing reserves of character and shores up the Hero at his lowest, when he’s closest to losing hope. Without each other, neither could reach his true potential, and when they’re in their proper orbit, stars align and worlds are saved.
-
Pathos – Occasionally, the Hero needs to be inspired, cajoled, or downright forced into his good deeds, and the Pathos, with his habit of being victimized, helpless, and generally having a terrible life, is perfect for that role. The Pathos is someone he can devote himself to protecting, helping him reach ever greater heights of nobility. The Hero draws his strength from being needed, and the Pathos needs all the strength he can get. When not playing damsel in distress, the Pathos is usually a gentle soul who will be attentive to the Hero, in his own way, caring for him in return.
- Tragic Villain – The Tragic Villain’s main attribute is, well, tragedy – he isn’t a bad person, deep down, and as the spokesman for all that’s right, the Hero knows it isn’t right to punish a person for being in pain. The Hero will not kill a tragic villain, as much as he may have liked to before he knew his past… Instead, he’s the perfect person to get through his defenses and help him heal, allowing him to play both protector and champion of light at the same time. The Tragic Villain in return can become a fierce protector in his own right, and can play equal parts Steed and Pathos, giving him both the strength and the reason to fight on.
