Despite being a fighting anime, something which is historically not exactly ‘deep’, Ruroken (as the author calls it in his free-writes in the manga) is an excellent series. The character development is above average even for genres that are supposed to be character intensive. This is definitely not a repetitive power-up arc sort of series. Every character grows throughout the course of their stay; villains are almost across the board sympathetic and a lot of characters inhabit an antiheroic ‘gray’ area. Of course, being a shounen series, the fighting scenes are usually pretty great, if not always realistic. The hero isn’t too heroic to be real, but is definitely both admirable and badass, which happens to be an excellent combination.
As far as yaoi goes, like all series with a tight plot it’s hard to work it within the series, but there are opportunities. The characters, at least, can make a few dynamic pairs.
