Firstly, even before getting to the plot, the artwork in Pet Shop of Horrors is gorgeous. The animals, scenery, and D and his clothes are all detailed and generally beautiful; the less mystical humans and scenery are sometimes lacking, but if you’re reading PSoH for Leon you’re missing a lot. Each chapter is an independent shot story, of sorts, meaning that there are only a small handful of recurring characters, but the overarching plot develops over the volumes and gets you interested in those few characters. When the plot takes over completely in the last volume, it gets a little confusing and leaves questions unanswered (what is D, really?), but maybe the sequel series will pick up that slack.
As the series is already laden with shounen ai overtones, it’s pretty well suited to the sorts of things fangirls like to do to it.
