Inuyasha
Inuyasha: A high school girl from the modern day is transported to the warring states era and, together with the half-demon Inuyasha and friends they meet along the way, has to attempt to find the shards of a magical jewel and save them from an evil enemy.

Frankly, there are more cons to this series than pros. From a shounen series, you expect fighting, and there’s plenty of it… Unfortunately, the entire plot is either repetitive power-up arcs where a character gets a new ability, or repetitive angst, where either Inuyasha or Kagome is torn about Kikyo. If you read the introduction up there, you might have noticed it says “an evil enemy”, and that is no mistake; there is only one major bad guy in the entire 56 volume series. There are plenty of throwaway villains, which are often part of him, but they rarely last more than a volume, and are pretty two-dimensional. In fact, most of the characters are pretty flat. In 56 volumes you would think you could toss in a little character development, but there seems to be precious little to go around. In terms of character growth, Sesshoumaru gets the major part of it, followed by Naraku, then Kagome, then Kikyo, then finally Inuyasha. Most of the main characters are flat-out annoying. For pros, however, the series does have a fair amount of intrinsic humor, and at least it has an over-arching plot… but unless you want repetitive romantic angst, there isn’t a whole lot of substance, and it’s probably not worth reading all 56 volumes of manga.
A note on the anime: the manga was not yet finished when the original anime series started, or even ended, and there is as a result a fair amount of filler and divergence from the manga. From the episode summaries I read, the second series seems to be sticking closer to the manga and moving at a good pace. As for the movies, they’re described as “outside the anime timeline”, meaning that they aren’t canon even to the hardly-canon anime. The most canon thing about them is probably Inuyasha’s father’s character design, which was approved by Rumiko Takahashi. He is never seen in the manga.
Yaoi is difficult to work into the series, because there is honestly very little chemistry between the male characters and [highlight to read spoilers] all but Kohaku and Sesshoumaru (of the protagonists) end up married – the antagonists all end up dead. The plot would seem to almost be suitable for it, but the characters themselves resist.
